Owner Independence Assessment

How Independent Is Your Business From You?

This assessment measures how well your business can operate, grow, and make decisions without relying on your daily involvement. Answer each question based on how the business operates today.

If you stopped working in the business tomorrow for 30 days, what would most likely happen?(Required)

Question 1 of 12

It would operate normally without me

It would operate, but some decisions would wait

Performance would noticeably decline

Several important areas would stall

I realistically could not leave for 30 days

How often does work slow down because someone needs your approval, answer, or decision?(Required)

Question 2 of 12

Rarely

A few times a month

A few times a week

Every day

When someone on your team encounters a problem, what usually happens?(Required)

They bring me a recommendation

They bring me options and wait for approval

They ask me what to do

I usually end up solving it myself

How clearly does your leadership team know what they can decide without you?(Required)

Question 4 of 12

Decision authority is clearly defined

Mostly clear, with a few gray areas

It depends on the situation

Most significant decisions still come to me

We do not really have a management layer

If a manager or employee consistently misses an expected result, what usually happens?(Required)

Question 5 of 12

Their performance is measured and addressed by management

It gets addressed, but inconsistently

I usually have to get involved

I take the responsibility or work back myself

We do not have clearly defined performance expectations

How much of your business could a competent new manager run using the systems and documentation that exist today?(Required)

Question 6 of 12

More than 80%

About 60–80%

About 40–60%

Less than 40%

Very little without asking existing people how things work

If one of your key employees left tomorrow, how much important knowledge would leave with them?(Required)

Question 7 of 12

Very little

Some specialized knowledge

Enough to create disruption

A significant amount

We have several people whose departure would create a serious operational problem

When the business grows, what usually happens to your personal workload?(Required)

Question 8 of 12

It stays about the same

It increases temporarily

It increases noticeably

Growth creates substantially more work for me

I have avoided growth because I cannot absorb more responsibility

If sales increased 25% over the next six months, what would be most likely to break first?(Required)

Question 9 of 12

Nothing significant

Staffing capacity

Processes and execution

Management/decision-making capacity

Cash flow or financial controls

Without asking someone to prepare a report, how quickly can you see whether the business is actually performing as expected?(Required)

Question 10 of 12

Immediately, from current reporting

Within a few minutes

I can see some of it

Someone has to assemble the information

I usually find out from the bank balance, month-end reports, or when there is a problem

Could you confidently answer today which customers, services, products, or departments generate your strongest and weakest financial performance?(Required)

Question 11 of 12

Yes, with current numbers

Mostly

I have a general idea

Not without significant analysis

If you wanted to reduce your involvement in the business by 50% during the next 12 months, what would be the biggest obstacle?(Required)

Question 12 of 12

Nothing significant

Finding or developing the right leadership

Too many decisions still depend on me

Processes and knowledge are not sufficiently documented

Customers or relationships depend on me personally

I do not have enough financial visibility to trust the business without me

I honestly do not know where I would start

If you wanted to retire, sell, transfer ownership, or step away within the next 3–5 years, how prepared is the business to continue successfully without you?(Required)

One final question

Leadership, systems, financial reporting, and responsibilities are already in place

We have made progress, but I would still be heavily involved in the transition

Several important areas still depend on me

The business would be difficult to transfer without major changes

I have not seriously evaluated this yet
